How to Clean Your Makeup Brushes

how to clean makeup brushes

Many people forget or just avoid washing your makeup brushes and that is horrible for your skin. Makeup brushes are full of bacteria after being on your face and having left over makeup on them. Today I will be sharing with you my tips on how to clean your makeup brushes without paying a fortune on brush cleaner.

What You Need:

  • body wash or Johnsons Baby Shampoo (this is gentler)
  • brush cleaning egg (or brush cleaning mat)
  • makeup brushes
  • water (obviously!)
  • and you!

What To Do:

  1. Start by wetting the makeup brush you are cleaning
  2. Add some shampoo or body wash to the brush cleaning egg
  3. Swirl your makeup brush around on the egg and rinse
  4. Repeat steps 1-3 until your brush rinses clear
  5. Leave to dry on a towel (try to tilt your brush down so your brushes will dry their original shape)

I got my brush cleaning egg for $1 off of Shop Miss A. This is a website where everything cost only $1! I got mine in black because that is one of my favorite colors. Using an egg that is textured is much more effective than using the palm of your hand because the texture on the egg will deep clean the brush and use more pressure to get all of the product out. You can also find these all over Amazon for very cheap.

Using a body wash is the most cost effective and your brushes will smell great afterward. Try to use a body wash that doesn’t irritate your skin. I like to use the Philosophy Body washes because they are very gentle on my skin and smell great!

Try to clean your brushes once a week on a certain day and leave time for them to dry. I like to clean my brushes every Sunday in the afternoon. This is my most productive day and it just seems right to start that week with clean brushes.

10 Genius Makeup Tips and Tricks

I am always searching for different ways to apply makeup and to make my beauty routine easier. So, today not only will I be sharing my top 10 genius makeup tips and tricks, but I will also be sharing why they work or what the benefit is.

Trick #1: Use Oil During Makeup Application

This has been all over Insta lately and I have seen some brands even making some new oils specifically for this reason. Although I didn’t want to splurge on those products, so I used what I already owned. A face oil can help you blend your foundation so much easier and it also adds hydration to the skin as you do it. If you like the dewy look this is the way to achieve that. It leaves the skin looking fresh and glowy. You can do this by dropping 3-4 drops of your face oil onto a damp beauty sponge and blend the foundation using a dabbing motion.

Trick #2: Use a Pre-Makeup Face Mask

I recently tried out the When Glamour Base Sheet Mask and loved it! This is a trick I would use for a special occasion or when you have some extra time on your hands. Use this face mask before you do you makeup for smooth skin that is prepared for makeup. After using this mask your makeup will look much better and stay longer as well.

Trick #3: Eye Makeup Remover

We all have those stubborn eyeliners, mascaras and even eyeshadows that don’t want to come off. You can try a makeup wipe but it might sting and it could also be irritating. A quick solution is to use coconut oil. You can easily rub this over your eye and rinse with water. Not only will this moisturize the eye area, it will also take off all your water-proof eye makeup.

Trick #4: Hairspray for Flyaways

I never leave the house without taming my little flyaways with a toothbrush and some hairspray. Simply spray the toothbrush (not the one used in your teeth) with some hairspray and brush on those frisky hairs. You can also set your eyebrows from moving around throughout the day by brushing the toothbrush on your brows.

Trick #5: Double Tasking Bronzer

For a quick eye look, you can sweep your bronzer into your crease and blend it out towards the brow bone. This gives more dimension to the eye and looks good with any eye color. This will also save you time in the morning by using your bronzer to bronze the cheeks then, add to the crease.

Trick #6: Facial Spray

Since I purchased 2 new face sprays I have been experimenting with them finding new ways to step up my makeup game. I recently started spraying my face after I apply any cream products (before blending them in). For example, if you like using cream contour after you apply the cream spray your face and then blend the product in. This will make the contour easier to blend in and help it to not look caked. You can also spray your beauty sponge before blending products in instead of wetting it under the sink.

Trick #7: Foundation Color Matching

If you shop in-store for makeup, especially foundation, don’t match the color to your face or your hand. The face is normally not the same shade as the neck and the rest of the body. This is especially true if you self-tan. Swatch the foundation on you neck instead. This skin color is most of the time the shade you whole body is and that is the shade you want your face to be as well. Try to find the best lighting in the store as well so the colors aren’t altered with bad lighting.

ELF Matte Lipcolors

Trick #8: Secret Sharpener

If you own any of ELFs Matte Lipcolors you would have seen the colored tip at the end of the stick that shows the color that you are using. Little did you know that is you pull that off there is a secret pencil sharpener built-in! This is awesome if you are on the go and need to sharpen a lipliner or if you even just want to sharpen one at home!

Trick #9: Eyes Before Face

To avoid the possibility of cleaning up the fallout on your foundation, do you eyes first. This way you don’t have to worry about removing your foundation after loose eyeshadow gets under your eyes.

Trick #10:  Layer Your Blushes

I found this trick from Kylie Jenner on her app. She layered 2 blush colors to create a natural flush on the cheeks. First, apply an orange blush and then apply your normal pink -colored blush. This is flattering on any skin tone and looks like a natural flush.

I hope you enjoyed these 10 great tips for makeup application!

How To Create A Skincare Routine

Skincare is one of my favorite parts of my beauty routine. There is just something special about washing your face a feeling refreshed and moisturized. I believe that having a skincare routine is essential to keep your skin youthful and clean. You may want to have a routine but, it can start to become overwhelming as you are standing in the skin care aisle. So, today I am going to be sharing my tips on how to find the right products for you are for your skin type.

The Basics

I feel the first mistake most people make when going through their routine is the order they use each product. You want to apply your products from the lightest to heaviest. For example, makeup remover is super light and most of the time doesn’t leave any product on your face. The last product you should use (the heaviest) should be a night cream (moisturizer). I also recommend not being cheap when buying your products.

Step One: Makeup Remover

You should NOT, I repeat should NOT leave your makeup on while you sleep. Even if you are so tired you just feel like doing nothing you should at least take off your makeup. This can be as simple as using some makeup wipes. My favorite is the Simple Cleansing Wipes . These wipes are perfect if you have sensitive skin. I love them 10x more than the Neutrogena makeup wipes. Another way you can remove makeup is with the Simple Cleansing Micellar Water. You can simply pour some product onto a cotton round and wipe off! The last way to remove makeup is with the The Makeup Eraser. I did a review of this on my blog, click here to learn more about it.

Step Two: Cleanser

For an additional cleanse, a cleanser will wash off an excess makeup and dirt. There are an infinite amount of cleansers on the market and it is hard to find the one for you. No matter what your skin type is the CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser is perfect. It has a nice creamy consistency and leaves your skin feeling soft and clean. For a mini facial scrub and deep cleaning, I use the Conair True Glow Facial Brush. This is a dupe for the Clarisonic and works just as well. It even comes with 2 attachments. If you have sensitive skin I wouldn’t use this everyday as it can be too harsh and create mini tears in the skin. About once to twice a week using a scrub can get rid of any dry skin on the surface of the skin. It also leaves it smooth and easier for other products to work into the skin. If you are sensitive to find a scrub that is not as harsh.

Step Three: Toner

There are so many great benefits that come from a toner. To name some, they remove any leftover dirt, restores pH, prepares ski for next products, hydrates, and calms. You do not want a toner that has alcohol. These tend to be too harsh for the skin and can even leave a burning and dry feeling after using it. pH is important for the skin because it acts as a barrier for the skin to keep out toxins and lock hydration in. If you are on any social media accounts you have probably heard about the Pixi Glow Tonic. This is great for adding a radiance to the skin and it also exfoliates the skin very gently.

Step Four: Face Oil

This was a product I just added to my skin care routine and I can tell that my skin has been more hydrating when I wake up. The Pixi Rose Blend Face Oil has such a pleasant smell and feels great to pat into the face and also down the neck. If you have oily skin you may want to skip this step and jump right into the next step. For use dry skinned gals, this step can make all the difference.

Step Five: Eye Cream

One of the most delicate areas of the skin is the under eyes. These are super important because they can show wrinkles very easily and also show your dark circles. To keep this area looking youthful an eye cream is what you need. I love the Benefit It’s Potent Eye Cream. This helps to defeat dark circles and fine lines. It also hydrates the under eye area making concealer blend much easier.

Step Six: Moisturizer

At last, the last step! Hydrating your skin is important for any skin type you are. At night, it is nice to use a heavy cream so it can work into the skin as you sleep. In the morning,  you want to moisturize but not use heavy products. Use something with SPF in it to battle the sun throughout the day. I have been using the Pixi Beauty Sleep Cream recently and am loving it! It is almost like a mini mask while you sleep.

I hope this helped you and I you have any other questions about skin care feel free to comment below! Or you ca ask me on my social media accounts too!

5 Spring Makeup Essentials

nude pink eye palette

Spring time is all about the glow! A major trend at the moment for Spring makeup is refreshed and dewy looking skin. Other than skincare, you can achieve this look with great makeup choices. Today, I will be sharing with you 5 spring makeup essentials that you need in your makeup bag this season.

Nude/Pink Eye Palette | Pink and neutral eyeshadow looks good on any eye color and they are the perfect colors for spring. Any palette that has more nude shades is great for spring so you can play around with other parts of your makeup and keep the eyes fresh. The Tarte Tartelette Palette ($21) has the perfect shades for a day to night look. If you are looking for a cheaper option the Physicians Formula Palette ($12) has great shimmery colors.

tinted moisturizer

Tinted Moisturizer (BB Cream) | Using a lighter base on your face will let your skin breathe as the weather gets warmer. Using a BB cream can still get you great coverage along with skin benefits. The Smashbox Photo Finish Tinted Moisturizer ($39) is highly raved about. I also love the Loreal Magic BB Cream ($11) from the drugstore.

Cream/Gelee Blush | To give you a soft and natural flush to the cheeks non-powdery blushes are great. They are easy to blend and you can easily add more product to reach your desired pigment. I haven’t heard much about the Josie Maran Gelee Blushes ($22) but, have tried a sample myself and loved it. It is very different from most products as it is like the consistency of jello. Both the cream and gelee blush can be used on the lips for a stain also.

tanner moisturizer

Gradual Tanner Moisturizer This product is not makeup for your face, but for your body. Every time I get out of the shower I love using the Jergens Gradual Tan Moisturizer ($10). This product gives you a natural looking glow after using it for about a week. To get you ready for shorts and even summer, I would strongly recommend you use this every day to every other day. If you want to add color to your face Jergens also has a tanner for the face. I would be light handed with this because you don’t want to over tan your face.

Spring Makeup Essentials

Highlighter | At last, the glowy skin essential — highlighter. My favorite type of highlighter for the spring is a champagne shade. The Balm’s Mary-Lou Manizer ($24) is the perfect shade to balance out your blush and bronzer. You can also use this on your lids for a brightening effect.

The 5 Product Face

We all have those days when you just don’t have enough time in the morning to do a whole glam makeup look. Keeping it simple is great to give your face a break from heavy makeup and giving it the ability to breathe. Creating a look that you can do quick in the morning is ideal when you are rushing out the door but still want to look presentable. Here are my tips and tricks for an easy look with just 5 products.

To keep the base simple, a multi-tasking BB cream is the best choice. BB creams are easy to blend, have medium coverage, and are good for your skin. The Tarte BB Tinted Treatment 12-Hour Primer SPF 30 Sunscreen has the 5-in-1 technology. This tinted moisturizer treats, primes, hydrates, protects and camouflages the skin all at once. This eliminates the need for a primer, concealer, and powder. These types of bases are also really easy to blend in with your fingers or a beauty blender.

If you are running late on time you want to reach for multi-tasking products. A cream blush can be used on the cheeks for a pretty flush and on the lips for a tint that will last all day. This also creates a matching cheek and lip which always makes any makeup look polished. The NYX Cream Blush comes in so many different shades and is affordable. Pick some of your favorite colors so you can switch them up to your mood.

No matter where I am going I always make sure to fill in my brows. This step can change your whole look – in a good way. The fastest and timely way to fill/shape your brows is with a brow pencil. Aim for a pencil that has a spoolie on the other end so your can quickly brush them out and then fill them in. My favorite pencil is from Billion Dollar Brows. The Brows On Point Micro Pencil works to create fine hair-like lines. It is also retractable so you don’t have to worry about sharpening it. If you aren’t that into brows and you just want a quick fix, Maybelline just launched their Brow Pomade Crayon. You simply sweep on the product and it tames at the same time so they stay all day.

Eyeshadow can be a complicated step in the morning when doing your makeup but, if you use a simple eye crayon it’s simple. Make sure when you apply your BB cream that you blend it over the lids as a primer. With a natural (or crazy!) eye crayon apply it all over the lid and blend it with your finger. The NYX Jumbo Eye Pencils have a great color selection and give you different shades to play around with. You can end there or your can apply it to your crease as well. Apply a small amount to the outer corner of the eye and take a blending brush and slightly smoke it out. This will give the illusion of complicated eyes when you’ve only used one product.

The last product is a good mascara. A lifting mascara is great if you don’t have enough time to curl the lashes. I love Maybelline The Rocket Mascara because it gives the effect of more drama while still looking like your natural eyelashes. Two coats to the top lashes will give a natural yet volumizing look.

Remember to have fun with makeup and let your true colors shine!
